Located in Seward County, Liberal is only three miles from the Oklahoma state line. The city's name came from a period in the 1880's from travelers and ranchers who would often stop for water at Mr. S.S. Roger's homestead. When asked what they him for the water, he replied, "Water is always free here." Surprised, visitors would respond, "That's mighty liberal of you."
That statement helped the area become known as the liberal well;
where travelers were encouraged to stop as they came through.
The community and surrounding area is also liberal with their hospitality, things to do, and places to see. Take time to enjoy this Oz-some area.
