Ulysses is the county seat of GrantCounty and is located near the center of the county. It's the largest town in a six county region and serves as a regional shopping area.
The town (and GrantCounty) was named for Ulysses Grant (1822-1885), Union general in the Civil War and 18th president of the United States. There is also a Ulysses in Nebraska, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Idaho; the one in Kansas is the largest.
The North fork of the CimarronRiver wanders across Grant county, passing just south of Ulysses. The broad valley carved by the often dry river provides a dramatic setting for the town.
Highways US 160 and K-25 intersect at Ulysses. The Santa Fe railroad also serves the town. |
