FINNEY COUNTY INFORMATION

     Finney County is the second largest county in land area in Kansas; consisting of 1,302 square miles and over 1,200 miles of maintained roadway, it offers an interesting history and a variety of attractions and activities. With a current population of approximately 40,000, it is the largest county in Western Kansas. The county seat is Garden City. Finney County measures 48 miles east to west across thetop, 24 miles across the bottom, is 36 miles north to south at the widest point and 18 miles in the panhandle. Finney County is located in southwest Kansas approximately 200 miles west of Wichita and 300 miles southeast of Denver, Colorado. US Highways 83 and 50/400 and Kansas Highways 156 and 23 serve the county.

    Finney County's economy consists mainly of farming and ranching in addition to some manufacturing. Wheat, corn and milo are the primary crops along with soybeans, sunflowers, alfalfa and others. Tyson has a large beef packing plant at Holcomb, KS seven miles west of Garden City.

 

 

 

GARDEN CITY INFORMATION

     Located along the Arkansas River, the Santa Fe Trail, and two US and one state highways,Garden City is a culturally unique city blended with over 100 years of history – creating a community with a diverse population and melting pot of opportunity. Garden City is also well known for beingvery progressive, contemporary, and friendly.

     Garden City, county seat of Finney County, was founded in 1878 and incorporated in 1883. It received its name from Mrs. Luticia Fulton, wife of one of the city’s founders. It boasts the world’s largest municipal swimming pool which is open for a small fee to the public and Garden City is home to The Windsor Hotel. Built in 1886 by buffalo hunter, John A. Stevens, it was considered the finest hotel between Kansas City and Denver.

     Garden City has a fine historic museum which features many interesting revolving and permanent exhibits. The museum is located in Finnup Park, at the entrance to Lee Richardson Zoo, the 3rd largest tourist attraction in Kansas! There are also two beautiful golf courses that rival the best in the state,

making Garden City an oasis for any golfer.

     Garden City, with a population of over 30,000 people, located in the heart of southwest Kansas, is recognized as a regional lodging, retail, and tourist stop!
